Watch Hill sits at the southwestern tip of Rhode Island, where the Atlantic meets Little Narragansett Bay and the coastline curves toward Connecticut. It's a small village — you can walk the whole thing in an afternoon — but it packs more into that stretch of coastline than most destinations ten times its size. Go For A Ride On Flying Horse Carousel
Catch The Brass Ring - A Watch Hill Tradition
Start here. The Flying Horse Carousel is the oldest operating carousel in the United States, built in 1876, and it's still running every summer at the end of Bay Street.
The horses hang freely from a center frame and swing outward as the carousel spins — that's the "flying" part. The brass ring tradition is still alive here too: riders reach for rings as the carousel spins, and catching the brass one earns a free ride. It's open to children only, which makes watching from the sidelines one of the best family-friendly activities in town. Lines form early on summer mornings. Get there before 10am. Enjoy The East Beach Energy
East Beach faces the open Atlantic and stretches along the ocean side of Watch Hill. It's wide, beautiful beaches, and consistently one of the best beaches in Rhode Island.
The surf is real here — this is not a calm-water beach — which makes it a favorite for swimmers and surfers alike.

Walk Out to Napatree Point Conservation Area
Napatree Point is a barrier spit that extends west from Watch Hill into Little Narragansett Bay, with the Atlantic on one side and the bay on the other. The walk out takes about 20 minutes and rewards you with sweeping views of the water, the Connecticut shoreline, and — on clear days — Fishers Island. It's a protected wildlife sanctuary, so you'll share the path with shorebirds, osprey, and the occasional seal. No dogs allowed in season. Wear shoes you don't mind getting sandy.
Walk The Shops on Bay Street
Bay Street is the heart of downtown Watch Hill — a short stretch of boutiques, restaurants, and ice cream shops that runs along the harbor. Olympia Tea Room has been serving since 1916 and is worth a stop for lunch or a lobster roll.
St. Clair Annex has been scooping ice cream since 1887. The Watch Hill Yacht Club anchors the harbor end of the street, where you can watch sailboats come and go on summer afternoons. It's the kind of main street that feels genuinely unchanged — because most of it is.

Watch the Sunset from the Historic Watch Hill Lighthouse
The Watch Hill Lighthouse has stood at the point since 1856, guiding ships around the rocky headland at the entrance to Little Narragansett Bay.
The lighthouse grounds are open to the public on summer Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, and the views from the point at sunset are among the best on the Rhode Island coast. The lighthouse museum is small but worth a look for the history of the Watch Hill Life-Saving Station.

The calm waters of Little Narragansett Bay make Watch Hill an excellent spot for kayaking and paddleboarding. Launching from the bay side gives you access to the back side of Napatree Point, the salt marshes, and the quiet coves that you can't reach on foot. Rentals are available seasonally in the village.

Best Time to Visit Watch Hill
Watch Hill is a summer destination — most businesses operate from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with the carousel running on its own seasonal schedule. July and August are peak season; June and September offer the same beauty with smaller crowds. The village is quieter in the slower seasons but never entirely empty — the lighthouse, the beaches, and the views are there year-round for anyone willing to make the drive.
