Watch Hill Rhode Island Things To Do: Carousel, Beaches and Village Life
Dawne LundahlShare
Travel Guide:

Watch Hill sits at the southwestern tip of Rhode Island, where the Atlantic meets Little Narragansett Bay and the coastline curves toward Connecticut.
It's a small sea side village — you can walk the whole thing in an afternoon — but it packs more into that stretch of coastline than most destinations ten times its size.
What To Do With Kids On Your Trip:
Go For A Ride On The Flying Horse Carousel

Catch The Brass Ring:
A Flying Horse Carousel Tradition
Start here. The Flying Horse Carousel is the oldest operating carousel in the United States, built in 1876, and it's still running every summer.
The horses hang freely from a center frame and swing outward as the carousel spins — that's the "flying" part. The brass ring tradition is still alive here too: riders reach for rings as the carousel spins, and catching the brass one earns a free ride.
It's open to children only, which makes watching from the sidelines one of the best family-friendly activities in town. Lines form early on summer mornings. Get there before 10am. Pick up a Flying Horse t-shirt or hoodie to wear while you're there.
Visit East Beach
East Beach faces the open Atlantic and stretches along the ocean side. Its wide, beautiful beaches are consistently ranked among the best in Rhode Island.
The surf is real here — this is not a calm-water beach with gentle waves — which makes it a favorite for swimmers and surfers alike.
Parking is limited, so walk from the village or arrive early. Bring everything you need; there are no concessions on the beach itself.

Walk Out to Napatree Point Conservation Area

Napatree Point is a barrier spit that extends west from Watch Hill into Little Narragansett Bay, with the Atlantic on one side and the bay on the other.
The walk out takes about 20 minutes and rewards you with sweeping views of the water, the Connecticut shoreline, and — on clear days — Fishers Island. It's a protected wildlife sanctuary, so you'll share the path with shorebirds, osprey, and the occasional seal. No dogs allowed in season. Wear shoes if mind getting sandy.
Walk Bay Street

The heart of the village, this charming harbor-side stretch is lined with boutiques, restaurants, and ice cream shops — a short but beloved strip where locals and visitors alike slow down, wander, and soak in the coastal atmosphere.

Yacht Club

The Yacht Club anchors the harbor end of the street, where you can watch sailboats come and go on summer afternoons. It's the kind of main street that feels genuinely unchanged — because most of it is.
Watch the Sunset from the
Historic Watch Hill Lighthouse

The Lighthouse has stood at the point since 1856, guiding ships around the rocky headland at the entrance to Little Narragansett Bay. The grounds are open to the public on summer Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, and the views from the point at sunset are among the best on the coast. The lighthouse museum is small but worth a look for the history of theWatch Hill Lighthouse Life-Saving Station.
Explore Paddle Boarding and Surfing
The calm waters of Little Narragansett Bay make this an excellent spot for kayaking and paddleboarding. Launching from the bay side gives you access to the back side of Napatree Point, the salt marshes, and the quiet coves that you can't reach on foot. Rentals are available seasonally in the village.

Complete your visit with East Beach Swim Trunks. Whether you're paddle boarding the bay or catching a wave at East Beach, or lounging on the shore, these trunks are built for every moment of your trip — moving effortlessly in and out of the water so you can focus on the fun.Best Time to Visit

This sea side village is a summer destination — most businesses operate from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with the carousel running on its own seasonal schedule, the beach town comes alive. July and August are peak season; June and September offer the same beauty with smaller crowds.
The village is quieter in the slower seasons but never entirely empty — the lighthouse, the beaches, and the views are there year-round for anyone willing to make the drive.

Where to Stay in Watch Hill

Watch Hill offers some of the most iconic accommodations in New England. The Ocean House is the crown jewel — a grand yellow Victorian resort perched above the beach with sweeping views of Block Island Sound.

For a more intimate stay, there is the Watch Hill Inn and vacation rentals are available in and around the village, making this coastal village a perfect base for exploring the coast.

Tucked along the shores of Quonochontaug Pond, the Weekapaug Inn is one of coastal New England's most treasured retreats. This intimate, members-and-guests inn blends classic seaside elegance with a deep connection to the natural landscape — think kayaking at dawn, evening bonfires, and farm-to-table dining just steps from the water. A beloved institution since 1899, it offers a rare kind of quiet luxury that feels both timeless and deeply rooted in place.
Where to Eat

St. Clair Annex is the village's beloved ice cream and sandwich shop — an institution that's been feeding families for generations. Stop in for a made-to-order sandwich before hitting the beach, or save room for a scoop (or two) after a carousel ride. Either way, a visit to St. Clair is non-negotiable.

Home to some of the finest dining on the New England coast, the village welcomes every appetite and every mood. The Olympia Tea Room is a true institution — a classic American restaurant serving locals and visitors since 1916, and still one of the most beloved tables in town. Don't miss their lobster rolls.

For a truly special evening, the Ocean House is Watch Hill's crown jewel of fine dining. Set high above the Atlantic with sweeping coastal views, this Forbes Five-Star resort serves exceptional New England seafood including their verandah raw bar, an atmosphere that's as memorable as the setting. Dinner on the Ocean House veranda as the sun sets over the water — it doesn't get better than that.
